Apple Crumble
Soft, cinnamon-spiced apples under a buttery, golden crumble topping — a warming dessert that's mostly hands-off in the oven.
Method
1
Prep the apples
Preheat the oven to 190°C (170°C fan). Toss the sliced apples with the sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice, then spread into a baking dish.
2
Make the crumble topping
Rub the cold butter into the flour with your fingertips until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Stir in the brown sugar, oats and a pinch of salt.
3
Top the apples
Scatter the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
4
Bake
Bake for 35–40 minutes, until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling at the edges.
5
Cool slightly and serve
Let cool for 10 minutes, then serve warm — with custard or ice cream, if you like.
TipKeep the butter cold and work quickly — warm butter makes the topping pasty instead of giving that light, crumbly texture.
